Multilingual sites (WPML and Polylang)

Give every language its own banner texts, cookie descriptions, colours and policy page with WPML or Polylang. Texts are never copied from the default language.

With WPML or Polylang active, each language of your site can have its own banner. Nothing to install: the plugin detects both.

Built-in languages

The banner, the cookie declaration and the built-in cookie descriptions come in 26 languages: every official language of the EU and EEA countries (Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Icelandic, Irish, Italian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Maltese, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish and Swedish). A language the plugin has no translation for uses English until you write your own texts.

Per-language banner texts

  1. Switch to a secondary language in the admin bar language menu.
  2. Edit the texts on the General tab and save.

The texts are saved for that language only. Empty fields keep the built-in text in that language, never the default language’s custom text, so a Finnish page never shows English wording by accident.

With WPML String Translation, you can also translate the [kncc_settings] admin text strings. They are used when a language has no texts saved on the General tab.

The order in which texts are chosen for a language:

  1. texts saved for that language on the General tab
  2. WPML String Translation of the default-language text
  3. the built-in text in that language (English if not translated)

Per-language settings

Banner style, colours and the policy page can also be set per language. Settings you do not change follow the default language.

Cookie names, categories, providers and durations are the same in every language. Only the description is translated: switch the language and edit the descriptions on the Cookies tab.

Policy page

Create a translated policy page for each language and add the [kncc_cookie_policy] shortcode to it. If a language has no translation yet, the banner links to the default-language page, so visitors never land on a missing page.

AI prompts

The AI prompts for cookie descriptions and the policy page are written in the language of your admin, so the results come back in that language.
